Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 3/4-inch diameter hole in the top of an oatmeal box.

    • 2

Place a flashlight inside the box with the light pointing up.

    • 3

Turn the flashlight on and replace the lid.

    • 4

Remove an egg gently from the incubator and place it over the lighted hole.

    • 5

Cup your hands around the egg to see inside the egg.

Tips & Warnings

  • Test eggs after 4 to 7 days of incubation.

  • An infertile egg looks clear except for a faint shadow caused by the yolk.

  • A live embryo looks like a spider - the embryo is like a spider's body with blood vessels spreading out like legs.

  • A dead embryo inside the shell has a thick dark ring running through the inside with only a faint shadow.

  • A living embryo will be dark inside the egg with only one or two small, light spaces with blood vessels running through them.

  • If you're not sure, place the egg back in the incubator and test it again in 14 to 16 days.

Cut a hole approximately 1 inch in diameter in the bottom of a metal coffee can. Place the coffee can over a lamp or flash light and sit the pointed end of the egg over hole in the can. You will have a clear view of the inside of the egg.
