How to Make an Egg Candler

Look inside your hatching eggs to see if there's a baby chick or if you need to remove a bad egg from your incubator.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Cut a 3/4-inch diameter hole in the top of an oatmeal box.

  2. Step 2

    Place a flashlight inside the box with the light pointing up.

  3. Step 3

    Turn the flashlight on and replace the lid.

  4. Step 4

    Remove an egg gently from the incubator and place it over the lighted hole.

  5. Step 5

    Cup your hands around the egg to see inside the egg.

Tips & Warnings
  • Test eggs after 4 to 7 days of incubation.
  • An infertile egg looks clear except for a faint shadow caused by the yolk.
  • A live embryo looks like a spider - the embryo is like a spider's body with blood vessels spreading out like legs.
  • A dead embryo inside the shell has a thick dark ring running through the inside with only a faint shadow.
  • A living embryo will be dark inside the egg with only one or two small, light spaces with blood vessels running through them.
  • If you're not sure, place the egg back in the incubator and test it again in 14 to 16 days.

on 11/22/2005 Cut a hole approximately 1 inch in diameter in the bottom of a metal coffee can. Place the coffee can over a lamp or flash light and sit the pointed end of the egg over hole in the can. You will have a clear view of the inside of the egg.
