Over time microfiber furniture can become dingy, dirty and develop unpleasant odors. Many stains and odors become trapped in the fabric cover of the furniture and can be removed by spot-cleaning. If the stains are extensive, or the odor is pervasive, the entire furniture cushion cover should be cleaned. As long as the furniture cushions have zippers along the back, they can be easily removed and placed into a washing machine for cleaning.
Things You'll Need
- Mild laundry detergent
- Plastic trash bag
Remove all pillows and cushions from the piece of microfiber furniture. For most couches and chairs, this means the back and seat cushions as well as throw pillows.
Vacuum the entire surface of each cushion with the hose attachment of a vacuum to remove any dirt, dust and crumbs stuck in the folds of the fabric.
Unzip each cushion and remove the foam padding from inside.
Set the washing machine to the gentle, delicate or hand-wash cycle. Fill the machine with cold water and add the proper amount of a mild laundry detergent as specified by the detergent bottle.
Run the washing machine through the full cycle and remove the wet cushion covers.
Place the covers into a dryer set to "air-dry only," which does not use any heat. You can also place the microfiber cushion covers in a location with good air circulation to air-dry.
Insert the foam padding, or batting, back into each cushion and close the zippers. Place the microfiber cushions back onto the furniture piece.
Tips & Warnings
- Sometimes the back cushions of microfiber furniture are stuffed with loose batting. Placing this batting inside large plastic trash bags keeps it contained until you are ready to place it back into the cushions.
- Always check the label on the cushions before placing them in the washer to make sure that they will not be damaged by water.
