How to Open NIF Files

Save

Gamebryo Lightspeed, a complete game development suite, uses NIF files during character creation. NIF files contain 3D images used in the game. Popular games such as "Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion," "Fallout 3" and "Civilization IV" use the NIF file extension for the 3D visual elements of the game. You can open and edit NIF files on your own without paying for the Gamebryo Lightspeed software. Once open, you can alter the 3D images to improve the look of games installed on your computer.

Things You'll Need

  • NifSkope
  • Download and install the NifSkope software. You can find a link to the download page in the Resources section at the bottom of this article. Click on the Start menu and go to "Programs" and "NifTools" to start up the NifSkope program.

  • Load the NIF file into the program by click on the "Load" button at the top of the screen or by clicking the File menu and choosing "Load."

  • Navigate to where you have your NIF files stored on your computer. If you're viewing NIF files from installed computer games, navigate to where those game files are stored. Click the file name and click "Open" to load the file into NifSkope.

  • View the 3D image tied to the NIF file in the panel on the right-hand side of the screen. Rotate the image by clicking on the window and dragging the mouse in different directions.

  • Change values of the NIF file in the "Block List" panel on the left-hand side of the screen. Change different values and see how they alter the image on the right. When you want to save the NIF file, click the File menu and choose "Save As."
