Nortel Networks Corp.--previously called Northern Telecom Limited--manufactured telecommunications equipment. The company originated in 1882 as a small manufacturing department within the Bell Telephone Co. of Canada. According to an Associated Press report, instead of emerging from a bankruptcy, Nortel was sold to several different companies in June 2009. Nortel’s Meridian telecommunications series consists of devices that use private branch exchange technology with many flexible telephone features.

Common Features

  • To call an extension, lift the handset and dial the extension number. Alternatively, press the “Intercom” button and dial the extension. The telephone will immediately ring the number.

  • To call voicemail, pick up the handset and press the “Voice Call” key and dial “66.” Dial the extension number and enter your pass code.

  • Call an outside phone number by dialing “9” followed by the area code and telephone number. Dialing “9” tells your phone system you are calling outside your network and initiates a dial tone for outside calling.

  • Transfer a call by pressing the key under “Transfer” and dial the extension of the call recipient. Press the “Join” key to finish the transfer.

Voicemail Features

  • Change your voicemail greeting. Press the “Check Voicemail” button and dial “981.” Enter your password and press the “Admin” key then the “Greet” key and the “Rec” key. Press the “Prime” key then the “Yes” key and record your greeting at the tone. Press the “OK” key to end your recording and “OK” to accept your new greeting.

  • Transfer a call to a voicemail box. With the caller on the line, press the “Transfer to Voicemail” key and dial “986.” Enter the voicemail box by pressing #extension number#.

  • Access your mailbox outside your network. Call your main office number and enter **. Enter your mailbox number and press #extension number# and your password at once.

Programming Features

  • Change your display contrast. Dial the feature button and then press “*7.” Press numbers 1 through 9 to set your desired level of brightness. Press the “OK” key when you are satisfied.

  • Change your ring tone. Press the feature button and then press “*5.” Press numbers 1 through 4 to listen to different ring tones. Press “OK” when you hear a tone you like.

  • Enter your personal speed dial numbers. Press the “Feature” key and then press “*4.” Enter the two digit code you would like to assign to the telephone number. Enter the area code and telephone number and press “OK.”
