How to Become a CPA in New Jersey

How to Become a CPA in New Jersey thumbnail
There are several requirements needed to obtain your CPA license in New Jersey.

In line with many other states, New Jersey has stringent regulations for the licensing of Certified Public Accountants (CPAs). This is because a CPA designation carries with it the protection of the public good from fraud. The CPA must be the most honest and upstanding person possible so her judgement and opinion is listened to. If you plan on becoming a CPA in New Jersey, there are three things you must achieve before you can apply for your license.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain your bachelor's degree in accounting. This degree must include 150 semester credit hours of which at least 60 of those hours must include business and accounting classes. The 60 hours are broken down in this manner: 24 hours in accounting, six hours in business law, six hours in finance, six hours of economics, and 18 hours of other business-related subjects.

    • 2

Pass the CPA exam. The exam is given in four parts consisting of: Business, Auditing, Financial Accounting, and Regulation. You will be required to pay a fee for each exam part. As of April 2010, fees are: Business--$180.95, Auditing--$230.55, Financial Accounting--$218.15, and Regulation--$193.35, and a fee to the state of $315. You must pass all four parts with a score of 75 or higher.

    • 3

Obtain the necessary experience. New Jersey requires all candidates for the CPA certification to have at least one year of experience working under a licensed CPA doing financial accounting and auditing. Once the year has been completed, candidates can apply for their licence from the state.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may take the CPA exam with only 120 credit hours completed, but you can not get your license without the completion of 150 credit hours.
