How to Make Your Own Hanging Net Canopy
A hanging net canopy is a simple project that can enhance your bedroom or living room to create a romantic retreat or Middle Eastern vibe. The most common type of hanging canopy is made from mosquito netting; however, you may choose to enhance your room with a sheer netting or fabric in any color. While romantic canopies are best in light or pastel colors, a Middle Eastern style works well with bold, darker colors like yellow, blue or red.
Things You'll Need

- Sewing needle with thread
- Ladder

1
Write down measurements of the area where you want to hang the canopy. If it's over the bed, measure from the point in the ceiling where the hook will be to the edge of the mattress and then down close to the floor. Add a foot or two to allow for the draping of the fabric. A seating area on the floor usually would be about as wide as a double bed.

2
At a fabric store, choose a netting or sheer fabric in the color of your choice. For traditional hanging canopies, white netting is most common. Sheer fabrics will allow you to customize the room with various shades and colors.

3
Fold the outside edges of the material over ½ inch and hem them using a needle and thread. Hemming the edges will give the canopy a clean, crisp look.
-
4
Fold the canopy in half lengthwise, and then fold again widthwise. The corner at the top of the folded area (not the edge) will be the center of the canopy.
-
5
Twist a small piece of excess fabric or netting to create the loop on which you will hang the canopy. If you do not have excess fabric, use a piece of yarn or other material for a loop, and sew it on at the center point using the needle and thread.
-
6
Position your ladder under the area where you want the canopy. On the ceiling, make a small drill hole so you have somewhere to screw in the hanging hook.
-
7
Screw the hook into the drilled hole, and slip the hanging loop over it.
-
8
Arrange the fabric around your seating area or around the bed. If it's over a seating area, place floor pillows within the canopy to create an inviting nook.
