Tips & Warnings

  • Use gel pens when writing a check as it is impervious to the solvents that take the ink off of checks in order to change them. Gel pens use specially formulated inks that contain color pigments, which are absorbed deeply into the check's paper fibers. A gel pen's ink will not be washed away with acetone, which is the most common "check washing" chemical.

  • Keep you personal information private. Never give out account numbers, social security numbers or credit card information over the Internet or the phone unless you have made the call and know who you are dealing with.
