Building a deck can be a relatively straightforward process and it results in a great place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. However, as decks are usually raised and have considerable lower support, the posts are often visible. A great way to cover up the support beams from your deck is with a wooden deck lattice. Building a deck lattice is a relatively straightforward process and can be achieved in a few simple steps.

Things You'll Need

• Lattice, 4- by 8-foot sheets
• Lattice trim
• Measuring tape
• Jigsaw
• Hammer
• Nails

How to Build a Deck Lattice

1. Pick the type of lattice material that is right for your deck. Lattice comes in a variety of materials, although the most common are wood and resin. If your deck is made of wood, consider getting wood lattice as well, or it may look odd.

2. Measure the size of the area your lattice will need to cover. Identify how much lattice you will need and always buy a little extra, just in case you make a mistake or need to make repairs later.

3. Start at the bottom of your deck and attach the lattice upward. Pound nails into the lattice at intervals of approximately 12 to 18 inches, depending on how far apart your support poles are.

4. Trim any overlapping lattice with a jigsaw. Make sure there are no gaps between the sections of lattice.

5. Measure and cut the lattice trim material. Install the lattice trim with nails and a hammer.

Tips & Warnings

• If the lattice material is not weather treated, you must seal the wood with a wood sealant to protect it from the elements.

• Always wear safety goggles and gloves when using a jig saw.
