Bicycle Trailer Coupler Directions
Bicycle trailers allow parents and small children alike to experience the pleasures of a bike ride. The common trailer attaches to the bike using a coupler (a mechanical link) that is positioned at the end of the trailer arm. Many different manufacturers of bicycle trailers employ this same coupler design, by which the trailer attaches to the rear axle of an average bicycle. Attaching the coupler properly ensures a safe ride for both pilot and passenger.

1
Remove the left (non-drive side) rear wheel axle nut. Removal will require an adjustable wrench, unless the axle features a quick-release. This release will be located on the right (drive-side) of the axle--flip the release to the open position and loosen the left side nut with your fingers.
-
2
Install any washers designed for use with the coupler onto the left side of the axle until they are flush against the side of the bike.
-
3
Fit the coupler over the left side of the axle. The coupler will have two openings--one for the axle and one for the trailer tow bar. The smaller of the two will fit over the axle. The larger opening will then be positioned directly below the axle.
-
4
Fit the end of the trailer tow bar into the large opening in the coupler. Secure the tow bar to the coupler by inserting the attached metal pin through side of the coupler and tow bar end.
-
5
Pass the strap at the end of the tow bar around the bicycle seat stay (the tubing that extends vertically from the rear axle) and clip the end in place near the end of the tow bar.
