From the time of the ancient Greeks, palm readers have tried to discern the characteristics of different personalities and read the future by examining the palms of the hands. Though palm reading is no longer as popular as it once was with the ancient Greeks, reading the palms of the hands can be an interesting skill to perform at dinners and parties. Learning how to read the palms of the hands is a fairly simple skill that anyone can learn with a little knowledge and practice.

Instructions

1. Choose a hand. The dominant hand, or the writing hand, is traditionally the hand selected for palm readings, though both hands should be read to get a fuller picture of the person's personality. The palm of the dominant hand tells the history and future of the person, while the non-dominant hand deals with personality.

2. Examine the life line. The life line on the palm runs from the bottom of the wrist to the top of the thumb. The life line represents the quality and length of a person's life. A deep, unbroken life line means that the person will live a long, healthy life. A shallow or short life line indicates sickness or a shortened life, and breaks in the life line indicate some sort of trauma in the person's life.

3. Examine the head line. The head line rests horizontally on the hand above the life line, and indicates the role that intelligence and the mind plays in a person's personality. The deeper and longer the head line, the more realistic a person is. A short or wavy life line indicates a short attention span. A head line that intersects with the life line means that the person's mind rules their body, while separate life and head lines means the person is carefree and adventurous.

4. Examine the heart line. The heart line lays horizontally above the head line and reveals the trends in a person's love life. A long, unbroken heart line means that the person has a stable romantic life, usually with a single partner. A broken line indicates that the person has a chaotic love life. A heart line parallel to the head line indicates good emotional control, while a curved heart line indicates a selfish and unrealistic view of love.

5. Examine the fate line. The fate line runs vertical on the palm from the wrist to the middle finger. The fate line represents how much outside forces, such as society and chance, affect a person's life. A fate line joined from the beginning to the life line indicates a person with strong aspirations and goals who is in control of their fate. A fate line joined at the life line in the middle of the palm indicates the person will be required to give up control because of family obligations. A fate line that breaks at the head line indicates a midlife career change.
