Instructions

    • 1

Find good reference images of men and women with natural poses, with a preference on poses that face the camera. Take your pencil and lightly and loosely start to draw the best pose on to your paper by breaking the human body down in to basic shapes such as squares, circles and rectangles.

    • 2

Use your reference images for accuracy and start to build up the body by adding the muscles and lines that connect the different parts together. There is no need to go into detail here, just keep the forms accurate.

    • 3

Keep the pencil work light and faint and avoid erasing too much. Shadows and face details can be left out as all you are drawing is the model template right now. Take care to note the differences, beyond the obvious ones, between male and female figures, as this will be important when designing clothes.

    • 4

Take your pen and draw over the pencil lines you want to keep. Take care with this as pen can't be erased. Wait for the pen ink to dry for a few seconds after so you don't smudge the paper before you erase the pencil lines. You should be left with a clean line drawing of a male or female figure.

    • 5

Photocopy your line drawing as often as you need to use it over and over again. Design your outfits and clothes right on top of the model. Try drawing several templates with different poses for variety.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you can't find good reference, shoot your own

  • Try using a mechanical pencil for clean lines

  • Draw the figure from the side and the back as well for a 360-degree view

  • Pens can leak so be aware of this
