How to Crochet a Panda Hat

How to Crochet a Panda Hat thumbnail
Crochet a hat in honor of those lovable pandas.

If you can crochet in the round, you can crochet a panda hat. The key is in the details like embellished eyes and ears. Crochet a panda hat for a baby shower; the black and white colors make it unique and gender-neutral. Or make one in an adult size for a whimsical friend or panda fan.

Instructions

    • 1

With white yarn, make two chain stitches and stitch five half double crochet stitches into the second chain from the hook. Join with a slip stitch.

    • 2

Chain one and make two half double crochets in every stitch around, joining with a slip stitch. Chain one and make one half double crochet in the first stitch followed by two in the next; repeat this pattern around and join with a slip stitch.

    • 3

Continue to increase the size of your hat. On the next round, make one half double crochet in each of the first two stitches and then two in the next; repeat around. For the following round, make three individual half double crochets before the doubled one. Increase in this manner until the hat circumference is 1 to 2 inches smaller than the circumference of the wearer's head.

    • 4

Crochet evenly around the next round. To do this, make one half double crochet in every stitch around and join with a slip stitch. Chain one and repeat this round, then repeat it again until the hat measures your desired height. Fasten off and weave in your ends with a large-eye blunt needle.

    • 5

Crochet four small circles out of black yarn. Follow the directions for beginning the hat, but stop after the second round and fasten off. These will become the ears and the eye patches.

    • 6

Using the black yarn, chain three and single crochet in the second and third chains from the hook. Chain one and turn, and make two single crochets in each chain across. Chain one and turn, making one single crochet in each single crochet across. Finish off; this will become your nose.

    • 7

Sew a small button to the center of each of two of your black circles. Stitch the eye patches and nose onto the front of the hat using leftover black yarn and your large eye blunt needle. Attach the ears to the top of the head using the same method.
