Check the print cartridges. While the printer is on, pull up the plastic cover to expose the print cartridges. Then pull up the latches that hold them in place and check the bottom of the cartridges. If the bottoms look dirty, it may be causing sputtering or smudging. Clean the bottom of your ink cartridge with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to fix this problem.

Re-align print cartridges. If your printed material is going off the page or sticking to one side, your print cartridges are not aligned properly. Power on your computer and open the HP Toolbox utility. Then click on "Align print cartridges." Your printer will make a loud noise and then the print cartridges should be moved back in place.

Look for jams. If your printer is making a clicking or staining noise, there may be something obstructing the printer. Open the rear printer door by releasing the two printer latches on the rear of the printer. Then check the paper rollers for obstructions. You can pull large obstructions out with your hands, but smaller ones may require the use of a pair of tweezers.

Cycle the power. If your printer has stopped suddenly, there may be a software issue and you will need to cycle the power so the printer won't overheat waiting for a response from your computer. unplug your printer from its power source and then wait a minute. Then plug it back in. All the lights will begin to flash. Unplug it again and wait another minute. Then plug it in again. This time, only the power light should flash.
