Building Height Restriction for Sheds

A shed not only enables you to store and organize such equipment as lawn mowers, power tools and gardening supplies, but it can also be an attractive addition to your home. Typically, however, you cannot simply build this structure based solely on what you like and want. Your shed plans will need to be cleared with local government agencies based on current restrictions on the size, height and placement of the shed.

Things You'll Need

  • Builder
  • Blueprints
  • Plot plan
  • Computer
  • Hire a builder, construction company or vendor of sheds to compose blueprints, building plans and a plot plan for your property.

  • Research the local laws and stipulations regarding shed heights and sizes. These can be obtained through your town or city's building department or on your municipal government's website. An experienced local builder may also be experienced with the laws and rules and should be able to guide you in the right direction.

  • Submit all of the paperwork to your building, zoning and health departments. Specific height, size and placement specifications will vary from state to state and town to town. The departments will need all of these materials before they can begin to build.

  • Wait to hear back from the various departments. Once you receive communication, you will know whether your shed plans will need to be modified to fit the height and other building specifications, or if the submitted plans are adequate.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although specifications vary from town to town, typically you will not be able to build a monstrous structure that towers over your home and your neighbor's home. Use common sense when beginning the design process, and you should be set on the right path.
