How to Troubleshoot a Compaq Presario PC Headset
Connecting a headset microphone to your Compaq Presario personal computer allows you to communicate with others over the Internet using your voice. Make sure that your PC headset is properly connected to the sound card on your Compaq Presario. If this connection is not made, audio information will not be able to transfer from the headset to your computer. On a Compaq Presario, the sound card is located on the rear panel of the computer. The plug that runs off of the cord attached to the PC headset should be plugged into the "MIC" input on the Compaq Presario.

Open the Device Manager. Click "Start," then "Control Panel," then "System." Click on "Device Manager." Right click on the listing for your PC headset and click "Properties." If the problem with your headset is easily diagnosable by your operating system, this window will tell you exactly what is wrong and exactly what you should do to fix it.

Reinstall the driver that came with your PC headset. Insert the CD-ROM that came with your PC headset into your Compaq Presario. When the installation utility appears, click on the "Install" button. Click "Next" on the window that pops up to install the driver. Restart your computer. Once the driver has been reinstalled, your PC headset should now work.

Make sure the "Microphone" line on your sound card isn't muted. Double click on the "Volume" icon in your system tray to bring up the "Volume Control Panel" on your Compaq Presario. Make sure that the "Microphone" line is not all the way down, and that the box next to the word "Mute" is not checked. Either turn up the volume or un-mute the "Microphone" line and then click "OK" to save your changes.
