How to Make Homemade Carpet Shampoo or Rug Cleaner

Make a homemade carpet cleaner.

Carpeting requires a more thorough cleaning than a vacuum every so often, as a vacuum only lifts dirt from the surface and does not disinfect or reach deep into the fibers of the carpeting. Commercial carpet shampoos and rug cleaning products are high-priced and contain chemical ingredients that many people do not want to use in their homes. You can quickly make your own homemade carpet cleaner that will kill bacteria plus give the carpet a deep, thorough cleaning.

Things You'll Need

• Vinegar
• Container
• Baking soda
• Laundry detergent
• Cleaning rag or steam cleaner

Instructions

1. Pour 2 cups water and 2 cups white vinegar into a container. The vinegar will clean, deodorize and disinfect without damaging the carpet.

2. Pour 1/2 cup baking soda into the container. The baking soda will clean and deodorize.

3. Pour 1/4 cup laundry detergent into the container. The detergent will clean and leave your carpet with a fresh scent.

4. Dip a cleaning cloth into the mixture and scrub into your carpeting. Or pour this liquid solution into the fluid canister of a steam cleaner, and run the cleaner as you normally would.
