How to Delete Autorun.Inf Virus

Save

The Autorun.Inf virus spreads to computers through infected flash drives and other kinds of portable storage. This virus is particularly troublesome because it disables the Task Manager, locks the Registry Editor, does not allow you to "Show Hidden Files and Folders" and can invite more viruses to install on your computer. You can delete this virus by using a command line prompt.

Remove from a Computer

  • Click on the start button to pull up the start menu.

  • Click on "Run" if you are a Windows XP user. Windows 7 and Vista users can type directly into the text box in the start menu.

  • Type "cmd" into the text box and hit the "Enter" key on your keyboard. This will open a black-and-white DOS prompt.

  • Type the following into the DOS window: "del /a:rhs [computerdriveletter]:autorun.inf" and change [computerdriveletter] to be the drive that has the virus infection. Usually, the default drive on a computer is "C." In this case, you would type "del /a:rhs C:autorun.inf" in the text box.

  • Click the "Enter" key on your keyboard to execute the command.

  • Reboot your computer to allow your computer to complete the changes.

Remove from a Flash Drive

  • Insert the Flash Drive into your computer.

  • Make note of what drive letter your flash drive has been assigned on your computer. You can view the assigned drive letters by double-clicking the "My Computer" icon on your desktop.

  • Click on the start button to pull up the start menu.

  • Click on "Run" if you are a Windows XP user. Windows 7 and Vista users can type directly into the text box in the start menu.

  • Type "cmd" into the text box and hit the "Enter" key on your keyboard. This will open up a black-and-white DOS prompt.

  • Remove virus's file attributes by typing the following into the command window: "[flashdriveletter]:attrib -s -r -h ." and clicking the "Enter" key on your keyboard. Replace "[flashdriveletter]" with the drive letter the computer assigned to the flash drive.

  • Delete the virus activation config file by typing ""[flashdriveletter]:del autorun.inf" into the command prompt and clicking the "Enter" key on your keyboard.

  • Remove the flash drive as soon as you click the "Enter" key. This will deactivate the virus on the flash drive.

  • Insert the flash drive into your computer and delete any exe files that may be associated with the Autorun.Inf Virus.
