How to Replace an Over-the-Stove Microwave Oven
Installing an over-the-stove microwave is an effective way to utilize valuable kitchen space. Often called space-saver microwaves, over-the-stove units combine lighting, recirculation range vents and microwave oven appliances into one compact unit. If you know how to use a level and a drill, you will be able to install one of these versatile appliances. While the installation process can be done by one person, enlisting one more set of hands will make the installation easier. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Microwave mounting hardware (included with new unit)
- Stud finder
- Drill
- 1-inch spade drill bit
- ¼-inch drill bit
- Phillips-head screwdriver bit
- Small adjustable wrench

Drill a 1-inch-diameter hole through the bottom of the wall cabinet directly above the stove. The hole should be centered between the left and right sides and about 2 inches from the back edge of the cabinet.

Attach the back-mounting hardware to the wall below the wall cabinet and above the stove. Locate the studs with a stud finder and align the mounting hardware holes with the hidden stud infrastructure. Screw the mounting hardware to the wall, using the provided mounting wood screws. A mounting lip is bent into the hardware plate along the top edge; make sure this lip is pointing away from the wall and toward the ceiling.

Attach the top mounting hardware to the microwave and insert the top mounting bolts into the hardware slots.

Drill two ¼-inch diameter holes in the bottom of the wall cabinet above the stove in line with the top mount bolt position.

Lift the microwave unit into place. Lace the plug through the 1-inch hole while the appliance is lifted into place. Align the top mount bolts with the ¼-inch holes in the bottom of the cabinet. Align the back mount hardware lip with the horizontal slot in the back of the appliance.

Support the appliance while bolting it to the cabinet, using the ¼-inch top mount bolts and provided nuts and washers.

Plug in the appliance. Program and operate it in accordance with the user manual.
