How to Install a PCI Modem Without a Driver

How to Install a PCI Modem Without a Driver thumbnail
Dial-up and Ethernet modems are available in PCI format.

Whether it is a dial-up or Ethernet version, installing a PCI modem is generally a straightforward matter. If you don't have a modem installation disc or driver installation file, however, you may worry that you won't be able to install the modem at all. Fortunately, most major operating systems come with a number of product drivers pre-installed. Even though you don't have a driver disc for your modem, the operating system should still be able to recognize it and install a generic driver that will allow it to be used without any difficulties.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the computer and unplug it. Remove the screws or thumbscrews on the back panel that hold the left side panel in place, then slide the panel toward the back of the computer case to remove it. Once the side panel has been removed, you may wish to lay the case down so that the open side faces up for ease of access.

    • 2

Locate the PCI expansion slots in the lower left corner of the motherboard. Choose one to install your PCI modem into, then use your Phillips screwdriver to remove the metal port cover that corresponds with the PCI slot.

    • 3

Line the PCI connectors on the bottom of your modem up with the PCI slot that you have chosen. Press the modem down with firm pressure to fully insert the card into the slot. Use the screw that you removed from the metal port cover to secure the modem into its position.

    • 4

Replace the left side panel on the computer, securing it with the screws or thumbscrews that you had previously removed. Set the computer upright, then plug it back in. Connect an Ethernet or telephone cable to your modem to allow it to access your network or the Internet.

    • 5

Press the power button to turn the computer back on, allowing your operating system to boot. Wait while the operating system recognizes the newly installed hardware. If a notification appears letting you know that new hardware has been detected, click it to launch the "Add New Hardware" wizard.

    • 6

Follow the on-screen prompts, allowing the operating system to install a driver from its database instead of choosing the "Have Disk..." option. Complete the wizard, rebooting your computer if necessary to allow the computer to boot with the modem driver in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many hardware manufacturers provide drivers for their products to Microsoft and other operating system creators, allowing drivers to stay up-to-date through update services, such as Windows Update.
