Comparing Brands of HDTV 1080P

Comparing Brands of HDTV 1080P thumbnail
You should do some research before purchasing an HDTV.

If you are not a technical person in nature or simply don't have experience purchasing an HDTV, you'll want to know what to look for when comparing brands of HDTVs. Even when you've narrowed your search criteria by selecting a 1080p TV, there are still key points of comparison to look for before purchasing the HDTV.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what kind of HDTV would work best in your room. For example, plasma TVs don't display well in rooms with a lot of natural lighting. Also, certain brands are known for the type of TV they manufacture. Panasonic, for example, is known for its plasma HDTVs, while Sharp is known for its LCD HDTVs.

    • 2

Compare the number of HDMI video input ports that each brand of HDTV provides. Some brands offer HDTVs with multiple HDMI input ports. You'll want to choose a brand that contains enough HDMI ports for your entire media center. For example, if you have three high-definition devices to connect to the TV, the HDTV needs a minimum of three HDMI ports.

    • 3

Look at how each brand compares in terms of power consumption. Some brands of HDTVs are more energy-efficient than others. See "Resources" for a link to a power consumption comparison chart by brand.

    • 4

Compare the refresh rate that each brand of HDTV offers. Refresh rate is measured in hertz and is shown on the technical specification sheets of all HDTVs. A higher refresh rate makes the screen appear smoother during fast motion scenes. Typical refresh rates are 60 Hz, 120 Hz, 240 Hz and 480 Hz.

    • 5

Decide on a budget. Naturally, some brands of HDTVs are more expensive than others. If a brand's low-end product is out of your budget range, you can cross that brand of HDTV off your list.
