How to Get a Teen Work Permit
If you want to work but are not 18 years of age, chances are you must obtain a valid work permit. Almost every state requires working minors to have a work permit; a few states even require that you undergo a physical examination prior to receiving a permit. The requirements vary from state to state; you will have to check with your state's labor division for more specific information. For states requiring a work permit, however, the process to get one is practically uniform.

Take the documents to your school principal's or counselor's office. Explain that you want a work permit. Show the principal or counselor the documents. If the documents are all in order, your school officials will provide you with a work permit application form.

Fill out the information on the work permit application. Give the application back to the school official. The principal or counselor will send out three completed forms to your state's labor division.

Wait for the state to issue the permit. Once the state receives the completed forms from your school, state officials will review the information. If satisfied that all requirements are met, the state will issue three copies of the work permit. The state will retain one copy for its records and send two copies back to the school. The school office will keep one record and give you the third. Note that you will have to complete this process every time you change jobs or take on a new job.
