How to Compare & Contrast Different Brands of Computers

How to Compare & Contrast Different Brands of Computers thumbnail
Shopping for computers is not hard when you know what you want

For the most part, different computer brands don't offer special proprietary hardware or tools that make one brand significantly better or more desired over another. Most of your comparison will be in price, service and the quality of parts that are in a given brand. You need to understand your needs and once you do you can make the best choice in buying a computer that fits your needs.

Determine what you need. Think of all the things you want to use your computer for, from sending email to watching movies and printing letters. If you'll be doing a lot of printing a computer package that comes with a printer might be important. If you plan on editing video you'll want a nice graphics card and a lot of power.

Look at what each model offers. Different brand computers offer different models that include standard hardware plus any customization. Dell, for example, has lines like Optiplex and Dimension. One line might include Intel quad core processors and the other line might use AMD dual core processors. Sometimes deals are listed that include a free printer with every package. Find out what the price is for each model and manufacturer and if the model offers your basic needs.

Consider service. Ask questions of the manufacturer like what kind of warranty is included and does it cover parts, shipping and installation. Find out if customer service is local or outsourced internationally.

Talk to different people you know to find out how satisfied they are with their computer. You may find that one brand consistently breaks down because of cheap parts or that another brand consistently lasts users a long time. Every brand will have some problems, so look for reoccurring issues.
