How to Use Mixxx Digital DJ

The Mixxx software is a digital DJ application that allows users to mix songs live or record a mix. Mixxx is a free application that claims to be created for DJs by DJs. The application supports MP3, FLAC, OGG and WAVE audio formats and includes compatibility with DJ MIDI controllers. Using the application is simple once you have a basic understanding of how to create your first mix and of the mixing controls.

  • Download, install and configure the Mixxx Software, making sure you meet all of the system requirements. After installation, all of the songs on your hard drive will appear in the "Library" portion of the application.

  • Play any song from the library or from a mix by using the playback controls located on the top right and left sides of the application. Use the "Cue" button to create a new start point when a song is paused.

  • Use the tempo controls to adjust the rate and tempo of the songs in your mix. Click on the "Headphone" button to send select audio to an output device or press the "Flanger" button to add a flanger effect to the audio of your selected channel.

  • Use the volume and equalizer controls to adjust for either channel, including adjusting the gain to add or reduce amplification. Use the master and crossfader controls to control the volumes of both track channels at once.

  • Use the "End of Track" mode next to each song to stop the song in a mix, loop the track or start a new track. Load new tracks by right-clicking on any song in the library. Choose to place the song in player one or two.

  • Click on the "Options" button from the menu bar and then click on the "Record Mix" option. Locate the folder where you want to save the mix on your computer and then click on the "OK" button.

  • Start playing music and the mix will begin to record two seconds after the music starts. Click on the "Stop" buttons for each track when you are finished recording your entire mix.
