Your Gamertag is your identifier on the Xbox Live service when you participate in online features such as playing multiplayer games and accessing downloaded materials. The Xbox 360 Gamertag you choose is usually saved on your Xbox 360's memory unit, but in some cases, such as if you've lost your memory unit, you may need to recover your Gamertag to access your Xbox Live identity again. Your Xbox 360 console includes a built-in utility for quickly recovering your Gamertag.
Press the Xbox 360 “Guide” button and press your controller's “X” button. Select “Yes, Sign Out” to sign out of any account you are currently signed into.
Press the Xbox 360 “Guide” button again. Highlight “Recover Gamertag” on the Xbox 360 home menu and press the “A” button.
Confirm that you want to recover your Gamertag by pressing the “A” button on your Xbox 360 controller. Provide the verification information required to recover your Gamertag.
Tips & Warnings
- Xbox does not recommend using the Gamertag recovery feature on a friend's console when you want to roam with your account because you may lose saved games. Instead, Xbox suggests that you transport your Gamertag information on your Xbox 360's memory unit to play with your account on a friend's console.
