How to Troubleshoot the iTunes Windows Installer Package

Simply put, Windows is not perfect. Because of this, Microsoft does their best to keep it updated and refreshed to constantly improve flaws. These changes may affect your previously installed software. Moreover, certain installer packages can cause grief, such as the iTunes installer. Why exactly these issues happen varies, but you can take a few steps to fix the issue and help install the software you want.

Instructions

    • 1

Restart your computer. This will clear up any temporary issues you may be having with RAM or your hard drive.

    • 2

Log into an account that has administrator access. This level of access is necessary for installing any type of software and may be the reason you are having difficulty installing iTunes.

    • 3

Uninstall any prior traces of iTunes on your computer, if you have an older version installed. There may be an issue in which the two versions are interfering with each other. You can uninstall the program by entering your control panel and selecting first "Add/Remove Programs" and then "iTunes." After you have uninstalled the prior version of iTunes, attempt to run the installer package again.

    • 4

Download and install the Windows Installer Clean Up utility. This tool from Microsoft will remove any remaining files from an installer package, and hopefully remove any issues in the process. Install the utility, select iTunes and let it work its magic.

Tips & Warnings

  • Though less likely to be the issue, re-downloading the iTunes installer may be helpful, as the file may have become corrupted during the initial download.
