How to Buy a Casual Suit

How to Buy a Casual Suit thumbnail
Casual suits are a good investment because they can be used for going out or work.

Casual suits are a great investment to purchase because they are versatile and their pieces can be worn together or separately. These suits differ from more formal attire like tuxedos because they are made out of less expensive materials, such as cotton and rayon, yet provide a polished look for going out or a casual day at work. Casual suits can be purchased anywhere from department stores to designer boutiques. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Think about why you are buying this suit. Are you planning to wear this suit to the office often? If, so stick to dark and classic versions. If you are planning to use just pieces of the suit separately, such as the jacket, you can be more creative with the design and color.

    • 2

Ask a salesperson to measure you if you are unsure of your suit size. The correct measurements make shopping for a suit much easier and less time-consuming.

    • 3

Try on many different suits and make sure that you can move freely in them. Casual suits should be comfortable and not to stiff in the arms. Raise your arms above your head and move them around to make sure that the sleeves are not too tight. Also make sure that when you button the jacket it is not too tight around your chest.

    • 4

Find a suit jacket that looks good unbuttoned, as well as buttoned. Casual suits are all about being able to have a more relaxed look and you want to make sure that your suit can achieve this goal, especially if you are wearing just the suit jacket.

    • 5

Alter your suit with a tailor if you need any adjustments. At larger department stores there are tailor shops within the stores, but their services may be pricier than other outside shops.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bring a pair of your favorite dress shoes, and dress shirt, so you can see how they will go with your new suit. Bring a friend whose style advice you trust to help pick out your suit.

  • Ask for advice from the salesperson if you feel stuck, but make sure to take his advice with a grain of salt, since his job is to sell clothes and some may say almost anything to convince you to buy a suit.
