How to Use Two Monitors with Only One Plug on the Back of the Computer

A computer can output a video from one plug on the back to two monitors using a VGA Y-cable. A Y-cable has one end with a single VGA connector and another side with two VGA connectors. A VGA connector is a common monitor connector. The downside of using a VGA Y-cable is that the two monitors will show the exact same thing. The only way to have different outputs on each of the monitors is for the computer to have more than one video plug in the back.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer
  • VGA Y-cable
  • 2 monitors
  • Connect the single end of the VGA Y-cable to the video plug on the back of the computer.

  • Connect one of the two connectors on the double end of the VGA Y-cable to one of the monitors.

  • Connect the second of the two connectors on the double end of the VGA Y-cable to the other monitor.

  • Turn on the computer and monitors.
