How to Reset the Service Engine Light on a 2002 Nissan Maxima

The 2002 Nissan Maxima is equipped with an on-board diagnostics two (OBD2) computer system that monitors all of the engine management system functions. This system alerts the driver if a fault exists in one of the system components by turning the Check Engine Light on, located on the instrument cluster, and storing an alpha/numerical code that identifies the faulty component or system. After the fault is repaired, the check engine light must be reset with an automotive scan tool.

Instructions

Turn the ignition key to the off position and plug the scanner's cable into the computer test port located under the driver's side of the dash, near the steering column. The OBD 2 computer system in the Maxima uses the same standardized connector and connector location found on all OBD2 vehicles.

Turn the key to the run position and turn the scanner on. Many of the high end scanners will power up automatically when the key is turned on. Consult the user/operators manual supplied with your scanner specific information about your scanner.

    • 3

Select DTC's (data trouble codes) from the menu displayed on the screen. This will take you to the DTC menu. From that menu, select "Read DTC's" This will display all of the saved trouble codes in the on-board computer. Write down the codes and code descriptions for reference should the "Service Engine" light return later. A code that returns immediately indicates a hard failure in that system or part. A code that returns after several days may indicate an intermittent fault in that system or a part.

Press the "Back" button on the scan tool to return to the DTC menu. Select "Clear Codes" or "Clear DTC" from the menu. The scan tool will dispay a warning that the codes are about to be cleared and ask if you want to continue. Select "Yes" to clear the codes and reset the "Service Engine" light. Test drive the Maxima to be sure the repair is complete and the light doesn't return.

Tips & Warnings

  • Resetting the "Service Engine" light will reset the emmissions control readiness monitors as well. The Nissan will have to be driven several times to allow the on-board computer to run the tests again for those monitors.
