How to Make a Wallpaper Paste Layer
Years ago people made their own homemade wallpaper paste because it wasn't something readily available at the store. Homemade wallpaper paste is easy to use and, since it's chemical-free, it's good for the environment, too. Supplies from home, the hardware store and a health food store are all that's needed to make a simple yet effective wallpaper paste for your next wallpaper project. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Measuring cup
- Flour
- Measuring spoons
- Alum
- Double boiler
- Wooden spoon
- Water
- Glass jar with lid
- Paint brush

Mix one cup of flour and three teaspoons of alum in a double boiler. Pour in enough water to make the mixture the consistency of a heavy cream. Stir the mixture well.

Heat the flour, alum and water mixture in the top of the double boiler until it thickens. Allow the mixture to cool completely.

A dropper helps measure effectively. Add 10 drops of clove oil and stir. Clove oil acts as a natural preservative so your wallpaper paste will last for awhile.

Pour the cooled paste into a glass jar and seal with a lid until use. Store the wallpaper paste in the refrigerator and it will last up to two weeks. Apply the paste to your walls using a clean paint brush.

Tips & Warnings
Use a small pot inside a larger pot if you do not have a double boiler. Simply fill the larger pot with a couple inches of water and let the smaller pot sit inside it.
Applying wallpaper paste can be a messy job; wear old clothing so you don't have to worry about it sticking to your clothes.
