How to Use a Flash Drive in an Xbox Memory Card Slot

The Xbox video game console’s memory card slot cannot accept nor use standard USB flash drives. But you can adapt a USB flash drive so it will work in an Xbox memory card slot. You'll need a combination of Xbox as well as Windows-based programs, a USB-to-Xbox-connector plus the Action Replay cable and its software. Enabling a USB flash drive to work with the Xbox’s memory card slot will not void the Xbox warranty.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the Xbox. Navigate from the Home menu to the “Memory” icon.

    • 2

Insert the USB-to-Xbox-connector’s USB plug into the Xbox’s memory card slot. Insert the USB flash drive into the USB slot on the other end of the USB-to Xbox-connector.

    • 3

Wait for the pop-up window to appear saying that the memory card has been erased. Navigate back to the Home menu and turn off the Xbox once this window appears. Remove the USB flash drive from the USB-to-Xbox-connector.

    • 4

Download the pre-patched game save software from an Xbox modification Web page, for example, the afterdawn Xbox modification Web page (see the link in Resources). Double-click on the software's icon after it has fully downloaded to decompress the files to the desktop as a folder.

    • 5

Download a USB viewing program to the computer’s desktop, for example, the USBView program (see the link in Resources). Double-click on the program's icon after it has fully downloaded to decompress the program to the desktop.

Insert the Action Replay disc into the computer's DVD drive tray. Double-click on the disc's icon when it appears on the desktop.

    • 7

Double-click on the icon of the installation program inside of the window that appears. Follow the menu commands to install the Action Replay software onto the computer’s hard drive. Eject the disc from the DVD drive. Restart the PC.

Write down the last four digits of the numbers next to “idVendor” and “idProduct” in the right column of the USB viewing program’s main screen. Quit the USB viewing program.

    • 11

Go to “C:\\Program Files\\Datel\\Action Replay Xbox\\Drivers.” Double-click on the “xbreader.inf” file in the window to bring up the text editor.

    • 12

Scroll down to “Devices” and change the “VID” and “PID” numbers in the text line directly below “Devices” to correspond to those you wrote down, with the “idVendor” numbers replacing the “VID” numbers and the “idProduct” numbers replacing the “PID” numbers.

    • 13

Press the “S” key to save the file. Quit the text editor.

    • 14

Go to “Start,” “Control Panel” and select “Device Manager.” Click on the USB flash drive’s icon in the left column of the window that appears.

    • 20

Double-click on the pre-patched game save software’s folder on the desktop. Drag the “SID 4 launcher” file from out of the folder and onto the Action Replay program’s main screen. Repeat this action with one of the “Launcher” files that are inside of the pre-patched game save software’s folder.

    • 21

Right-click on the icon of the USB flash drive that is on the desktop. Select “Eject” from the pop-up menu. Remove the USB flash drive from the USB port of the computer.

    • 22

Insert the USB flash drive into the USB-to-Xbox-connector. Turn on the Xbox and use the USB flash drive just as you would a memory card.

Tips & Warnings

  • Inexpensive USB drives are prone to failure and should not be used if a high quality USB flash drive is available.
