How to Twist Cording for a Pillow
Embellish throw pillows in a variety of ways to make them beautiful additions to your home décor. When you make your own throw pillows, you know they will be individual representations of your creativity like no other pillows anywhere. A special embellishment you can use to decorate pillows is cording you twist yourself. Once you twist the yarn into cording, you can then stitch it onto your pillows as beautiful trim pieces.
Things You'll Need
- Worsted weight yarn
- Scissors
- Hand sewing needle
- Thread (to match the yarn)
- Pillow
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut a length of yarn that is four times longer than the length you desire for the cording.
-
2
Fold the yarn in half and tie the loose end in an overhand knot.
-
-
3
Secure the knotted end under a chair leg or ask someone to hold it securely for you while you twist the yarn.
-
4
Pull the yarn length taut and begin twisting the other end of the yarn. Continue twisting until the yarn twists so tightly that it folds back onto itself if you let go of it.
-
5
Remove the yarn from the chair leg or the person who was holding it. Fold the twisted yarn in half again and knot the open ends of the yarn with an overhand knot. You now have a length of twist cording that is strong and ready to attach to your pillow.
-
6
Position the cording where you want it on the pillow. Suggestions for placement include along the outer border of the pillow or outlining seams in the center of the pillow.
-
7
Thread the needle with a 15-inch length of thread and tie a knot at the end of the thread. Stitch the cording to the pillow with the needle and thread. Insert the needle into the pillow at the point where the cording begins. Pull the needle through so the knot of the thread pops through the pillow fabric and buries under the fabric.
-
8
Come up on one side of the cording with the needle and take a small stitch over the cording. Insert the needle back down into the pillow on the other side of the cording to anchor the cording with the stitch.
-
9
Repeat step 8 to stitch the cording to the pillow, making your anchor stitches approximately 1 to 2 inches apart. Continue stitching until you anchor the entire length of cording to the pillow top.
-
10
Tie an overhand knot in the thread and insert the needle back down into the pillow fabric. Pull until the knot pops through beneath the pillow fabric to bury the knot. Clip off the thread at the surface of the pillow to finish.
