How to Troubleshoot a Porter Cable Finish Nailer That is Not Driving Nails

Porter-Cable finish nailers come in a variety of styles, and all are designed to use air pressure to drive finish nails. When a Porter-Cable finish nailer is not driving nails, you should examine a number of different things not only with the nailer itself, but also with the air hose, couplings and air compressor.

Things You'll Need

  • Needle-nose pliers

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the air hose from the back of the finish nailer. Attach a pneumatic air nozzle to the air hose coupler, and depress the trigger to verify that there is ample air pressure coming through the hose. Also check that the air compressor is putting out between 80 to 120 PSI of air pressure.

    • 2

Slide open the magazine, and remove all of the remaining clips of nails in the magazine.

    • 3

Open the nose on the front of the nailer. Remove any jammed nails found in the nose. Also check that the plunger is not extended.

    • 4

Close the nose. Insert a new clip of nails into the magazine, and close the magazine.

    • 5

Insert four drops of pneumatic nailer oil into the nailer's air coupler. Reattach the air hose. Listen for any consistent air leakage from the coupler or nailer.

    • 6

Depress the safety pin on the nose of the nailer into the wood, and fire a test shot. Be certain to fully depress the safety on the nose before pulling the trigger.

Tips & Warnings

  • If, after following the aforementioned steps, the nailer still won't fire, you may have a bent trigger pin or other damage to the nailer that requires service. Also if you hear air leaking from the coupler or air line, try a different air hose.

  • When working with power tools, always wear appropriate safety equipment, including safety glasses.
