How to Treat Heartworms With Black Walnut

How to Treat Heartworms With Black Walnut thumbnail
Dogs with heartworm may cough continuously and become lethargic.

Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes to both dogs and cats. Once heartworms enter the bloodstream, a variety of life threatening problems may occur, including the blocking of blood flow to the heart. Animals with heartworm will become inactive with a incessantly dry cough. Upon early detection, a prescribed medication is given on a regular basis in order to rid the body of heartworms; however, these medications come with side effects and can weaken the immune system. Alternative medicines, like black walnut, can be a much more safe and effective treatment method.

Instructions

    • 1

Black walnut can be found at most natural food stores. Pick up a bottle of black walnut hull in 500mg capsules. Several bottles will most likely be needed, since it may take months to completely get rid of heartworm.

    • 2

Add a clove of garlic (optional) and black walnut hull to your pet's food or water once a day. Use a quarter of a 500mg capsule for dogs between five and 25 pounds, and half a capsule for dogs larger than 25 pounds.

    • 3

Only use black walnut no more than once a day until the heartworms have cleared as determined by your veterinarian. Your pet should regain energy and experience reduced coughing and a stronger immune system as the heartworm resolves. This treatment may take months.

Tips & Warnings

  • Rosemary, thyme, mint, sage, clove, garlic, hawthorn berry (heart healthy herb), milk thistle extract, dried cranberry fruit and wormwood are other less potent herbs that are used to treat heartworm.

  • Black walnut is very potent and can be deadly if given at a high dose. Only give it to your pet once a day.
