Librarians must stay abreast of the latest technology, hone their organizational and research skills, and learn how to interact and resolve the many problems of library visitors on a daily basis. Thus, it is no surprise that becoming a librarian is no small feat. In South Carolina, schools refer to many of their librarians as Library Media Specialists (LMS). This is the premier library position. To become an LMS, the applicant must complete the requirements set out by the South Carolina Board of Education.

      Earn a bachelor's degree from a four-year institution.

      Earn a Master of Library Science (MLS) degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution.

      Complete an advanced program to prepare for the position Library Media Specialist or Media Specialist, as endorsed by the South Carolina Board of Education.

    • 4

      Meet or exceed the minimum testing requirements on all examinations required by the South Carolina Board of Education.
