How to Make Your Own Pop Up Card for a Classroom

How to Make Your Own Pop Up Card for a Classroom thumbnail
Valentine's Day is the perfect time for a p-up card.

According to the website Eslteachersboard.com, pop up cards have a long history, originating back to "the 13th century when writers began including movable elements in books. By the 17th century, 'novelty books' with flaps and peepholes were delighting children." You can continue to delight children with a pop-up card by making a large card for your classroom and dedicating it to all of your students. This is especially useful to do around Valentine's Day so that technically everyone receives a card and no one is left out.

  • Large piece of red poster board
  • White craft glue
  • Red glitter
  • Red construction paper
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the large piece of poster board in half, pressing to ensure a sharp crease. Turn the piece of poster board so that the crease is vertical and on the far left side. The poster board should now resemble an extra large greeting card.

    • 2

Write the words "Happy Valentine's Day" in white craft glue on the front of your card. Cover the glue in red glitter until it is well-saturated. Set aside to dry.

    • 3

Cut a heart out of red construction paper. The heart should be slightly shorter than the height of your card.

    • 4

Cut another heart out of white construction paper that is slightly smaller than your red heart. Glue the white heart on top of the red heart.

    • 5

Cut another heart out of pink construction paper that is slightly smaller than your white heart. Glue the pink heart on top of the white heart. Set the hearts aside to dry.

    • 6

Take a piece of card stock, and cut two strips that are approximately 10 inches by 2 inches. Lay them directly on top of each other, and make 1-inch zig-zag folds, like an accordion.

    • 7

Turn your three-layered heart over and glue the end of one of the accordion-folded strips to the top of the back of the heart, and glue the end of the other accordion-folded strip to the bottom of the back of the heart.

    • 8

Shake the excess glitter off the front of your card. Open the card so that the inside is right in front of you.

    • 9

Glue the far end of each accordion-style strip to the right side of the inner portion of the card, directly in the middle. Fold the strips up, and close the card. The heart should now spring out at you when you open the card.

    • 10

Write in magic marker underneath the springing heart something to the effect of: "Teaching you special students makes my heart jump." Post your card in a visible place in your classroom, such as a bulletin board.
