How to Write a Case Report

A case report is an integral part of the medical and research communities and is a document that details the results of an experiment. Before writing a case report, you must first determine whether the report is publishable and identify a potential journal. Publishable case reports should question an existing theory, create questionable responses among colleagues, illustrate new ideas or make a personal impact. Always make sure to get patient consent when using people as your subjects within an experiment.

  • Describe your research through an introduction. The "Introduction" needs to be limited to one or two sentences and is a brief description of your case report. Mention how rare the information is and what the reader is going to learn in the report.

  • Summarize all the information and research you have gathered. In the "Summary" section, write about the history or any backstory involved in the project. You should also list any positive or negative discoveries, investigation details, patient conditions and treatment options. Separating the topics into paragraphs is common, because it keeps the information easy to read and understand.

  • Present your argument and create a discussion. The "Discussion" section should start off with your research objective and what you hope to prove in the case report. Next, talk about what others have written and discussed about this topic or condition. The third stage of this section must lay out the message you are attempting to convey and any proof to support your objective.

  • Write a conclusion. This is an opportunity to summarize the entire project and bring the project to a close. The purpose of this section gives you an opportunity to leave readers with a pertinent message they can think about.

  • List any references used in the case report. You must give credit where credit is due, and anytime you used anyone else's work in your project, you must list the person, periodical and date. This is so anyone reading your case report can find these references and ensure that the information is correct.
