How to Clean a Cast Iron Park Bench

Cast iron park benches are traditional seating items found in outdoor areas such parks, backyards and patios. The cast iron is durable and long-lasting, requiring a simple cleaning every year or so to keep residue and rust off of the bench. A cast iron bench can be easily cleaned with a few inexpensive items, as well as a moisturizing agent that will restore shine to the cast iron surface. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Spray bottle
  • Fine-grain steel wool
  • Cleaning rags
  • Dish detergent
  • Baby oil
  • Car wax

Instructions

      Fill a spray bottle with 2 cups warm water and 1 squirt liquid dish soap.

      Spray a mist of the soapy water onto the park bench, and scrub it gently with a piece of fine-grain steel wool. This will remove residue and buildup without scratching the bench. Clean in the direction you prefer, either working one panel at a time, or cleaning in small sections as you go along. Rinse and dry.

      Saturate the edge of a cleaning rag with baby oil.

      Rub the oil gently into the cast iron surface. Use long, even swipes that follow the grain of the iron. Let sit overnight.

      Buff the cast iron with a fresh cleaning rag the following morning. Rub in tiny circular motions. This will remove any excess oil that is still sitting on the cast iron, and will restore the natural shine of the cast iron.

      Apply a coating of car wax one to two times per year, or as needed when you the bench requires an extra polishing. Follow the application instructions on the car wax packaging.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always touch up chipped paint as soon as you notice it, which will prevent the iron from corrosion.
