How to Set the Shutter Speed on a Nikon D40

The Nikon D40 is a digital still camera that records content onto a memory card. The camera has the same basic features as standard film cameras, including adjustments for the exposure, aperture and shutter. In order to adjust the shutter speed you need to perform a few additional selections on the Nikon D40 compared to a film camera. It does not take long to understand the workings of the camera and set the shutter to your desired speed.

Instructions

1. Power on the Nikon D40 camera.

2. Adjust the circular dial on the top right side of the digital camera to "S" (there are 12 different options on the dial). The "S" stands for shutter and allows you to manipulate the shutter speed of the camera.

3. Find the viewfinder. To the right you will see a small, digital screen, followed by a dial. Turn this dial to the right and you can see a number adjust on the digital screen (it takes up the entire screen). This is the shutter speed. Spin the dial until you find the shutter speed you want.

4. Turn the dial on the top of the camera away from "S" (you can adjust it to any other setting) to lock this shutter speed into place. You can turn the dial either clockwise or counterclockwise.
