Many men and women with blond hair and well water may experience hair staining. The iron content in the water will cause "rust" stains to turn the hair a brassy orange. Thankfully, the brassy hair stain is not permanent and can be treated quickly and easily.

Lemon juice with cream of tartar works wonders to remove the orange tint in your hair. Simply mix lemon juice with the cream of tartar in a small bowl. When you're in the shower, apply the lemon juice/tartar mixture to your hair. Allow the mixture to set in your hair for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, you can rinse out the solution and wash your hair as normal. The juice and tartar act to strip the brassy color from your hair while adding highlights.

Blue Shampoo

There are special shampoos and conditioners that help to prevent brassy, orange color in your hair. While you're in the shower, pour the shampoo in your hand (the amount you'd normally use) along with 1 tablespoon of baking soda. Mix the baking soda with the shampoo together. Apply the shampoo/baking soda mixture to your hair and massage it in. The shampoo and the baking soda will safely strip the orange color away. When you're finished washing your hair, use a blue condition (but without the baking soda) to add softness to your hair.

To help remove the rust color from you hair best, you should install a water filter. A water filter will help to soften the water and remove iron (along with other water chemicals) from the water. Well water, or hard water, will also cause your hair to become brittle, crunchy and damaged. A water filter will help those hair problems along with the iron stains.
