How to Tie Fishing Line to a Jig

Popular and productive with many anglers, a jig typically features a ball of lead attached to a long shank hook. Feathers, rubber skirts or animal hairs are used to dress the jig as an attractor for fish. Jigs are used for a variety of game fish species, including crappie and bass. Tying a jig to your fishing line is a simple process and is easily accomplished by most anglers.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie your fishing line to a jig with a Palomar knot. Begin forming the knot by pulling several inches of free end of your line through the eye of the jig.

    • 2

Form a loop 3 to 4 inches from the free end of the line. Feed the free end back through the eye of the jig.

    • 3

Pull the free end of the line through the eye of the jig. Place the free end of the line alongside the main line to form a doubled line. Adjust the line at this point so the loop is 3 to 4 inches long and there are 3 to 4 to inches of the free end of the line alongside the main line.

    • 4

Tie an overhand knot with the loop and the doubled line. Pull the loop through the overhand knot but do not tighten the knot at this point.

    • 5

Slip the loop over the bend of the jig hook. Begin tightening the not by holding the jig in one hand and pulling the doubled line with the other. Moisten the knot and slowly pull the knot tight.

    • 6

Trim any excess from the free end of the knot with a sharp pair of scissors.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Palomar is easy to tie and provides exceptional knot strength as it requires the line to be doubled through the eye of the jig.
