How to Make a Telescope for Children

A telescope uses a combination of lenses or mirrors to aid in observation of an object. The telescope uses reflective light and magnification, usually in the form of a tubular instrument. Homemade telescope kits and supplies can range in price from just a few to hundreds of dollars; however, a simple homemade telescope suitable for young children can be built with items around the house.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a square of aluminum foil on a matching square piece of cardboard. Flatten the foil to smoothly lay over the cardboard. The cardboard will provide a sturdy surface for the aluminum foil so that when the needle hits the foil, the needle will make a clean hole instead of ripping the foil.

    • 2

Punch the needle point through the center of the aluminum foil. Push into the cardboard until the thickest part of the yarn needle touches the foil. Pull the needle out of the cardboard and foil slowly. Set aside the cardboard.

    • 3

Make a circle with one hand. Center the pinhole in the aluminum foil over the middle of the circle made with the hand. Drape the foil over the positioned hand.

    • 4

Hold the magnifying glass with the other hand. Place the hand with the aluminum foil directly over the magnifying glass.

    • 5

Look through the pinhole to examine objects underneath the magnifying glass.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the telescope outside or in brightly lit areas for best results.

  • Never look at the sun; it can hurt your eyes.
