Instructions

    • 1

Locate a broken section of tile to begin the process of prying up the tile. If there is no open area, use a chisel or flat-head screwdriver and tap with a hammer along a grout line to create an area of entry. Use a 4-inch chisel and begin dislodging the tiles in a straight line. Try to follow the flow of the tiles instead of coming at it from all directions.

    • 2

Switch to a long-handled floor scraper to begin removing the tiles more quickly.
Hold the scraper at a 45-degree angle and thrust the tool under the tiles in a fluid motion to help break up the tiles and also dislodge some of the thin set.

    • 3

Use the chisel and hammer to chip away at clumps of thin set remaining on the floor that didn't come up with the scraper. Be careful not to damage the flooring too much when removing the dried thin set.

    • 4

Use a large shovel or snow shovel to quickly remove as much of the broken tile, mortar, and thin set debris as possible. Deposit the debris into a large trashcan or bucket. Use a broom to sweep up the dust and smaller debris into a dust pan.

    • 5

Review the floor and look for any of the old tile or other materials still stuck to the floor and remove it using either the chisel or scraper the same as done previously. Sweep and clean the floor again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remove the debris periodically to keep the floor visible.

  • Place plastic over all doors and tape it to the threshold to keep dust and debris from spreading throughout the rest of the house.

  • Wear safety glasses and a face mask to protect your eyes and avoid breathing in dust or other debris.
