Instructions for Clothesline Crocheting

The technique for clothesline crocheting embeds clothesline in the yarnwork to stiffen the project. This kind of crocheting uses a straight, blunt needle instead of a hook. From a spiral center, bowls, baskets and rugs are easily shaped.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/16-inch diameter clothesline (48 inches for a large bowl)
  • Four-ply worsted-weight yarn (assorted colors, about 6 oz. total)
  • Blunt end number 16 tapestry needle
  • Masking tape (optional, for clothesline ends)

Instructions

  1. Clothesline-Crocheted Bowl

    • 1

Taper the end of the clothesline so that it is a point rather than a blunt end. Wind a small piece of masking tape over the point so that it does not fray.

    • 2

Thread the needle with a long length of yarn, about 6 feet, and use it as a double strand (now about 3 feet long). Place the double strand of yarn next to clothesline with ends together. Wrap the yarn around the clothesline and yarn to hide the ends.

    • 3

Start a spiral by coiling the clothesline around the wrapped end. This will be the center. Make a figure-eight with the double strand of yarn, going over and under the core of the spiral and the adjoining spiraled clothesline. The figure-eight yarn should cover the bare clothesline next to the initial yarn wrapping.

    • 4

Continue wrapping the clothesline with the yarn. After three wraps, make a figure-eight to attach the newly wrapped clothesline to the adjoining wrapped coil. Continue with this pattern, three wraps and a figure-eight, shaping the bowl as you go.

    • 5

End with a few figure eights and tuck ends of the yarn underneath the last few yarn wraps.

Tips & Warnings

  • Shape the clothesline bowl over a clear bowl and you will be able to use the clear bowl as a liner.

  • A rug is made the same way, but shaped to be flat in the winding and figure-eight process.
