How to Make a Portfolio & Link to a Resume

Save

The practice of building an online portfolio and linking a resume to it is becoming increasingly popular for a couple of reasons. First, it can make your information easy to find. Once you have the website set up you can post the link at networking sites like Linkdin, which many Internet-savvy employers search when looking for fresh talent. Second, online portfolios and resumes are a demonstration of your technical abilities. Future employers will be much more impressed by a show of what you can do than a bullet on a resume stating, "Computer skills."

  • Choose and purchase a website domain.
There are many companies that will register your domain name for a small fee, usually around $10, but GoDaddy is the most well-known company for this.
Regardless of what company you choose you can go to their website and search for website domains to see if the one you want is available. The most obvious pick will be "www.yourname.com", but depending on the popularity of your name this may be unavailable.
In that case you will need to be more creative. Consider adding your business title, your middle name or using a .net address.

  • Choose an Internet service to build your website.
The days of knowing the alternate language of HTML code are long gone, as there are many sites that have user-friendly website-building tools.
For HTML websites, Vistaprint and Intuit are popular choices. If you want something with a bit more pizazz, you may consider a flash site from Wix or a similar company.
Most of these companies have free trials, so you may want to use the trials to try out their website builders and then decide which one to stick with.

  • Choose a website template.
Regardless of what company you choose for your website builder there will be hundreds of templates from which to choose. This is generally the easiest way for a beginner to form a website.
The template will give you the bare-bones structure and design elements of your site and allow you to plug in your own text and photos.

  • Create the portfolio.
Use one of your site's pages as a portfolio page and then add the items you would like to display. If your portfolio consists of photos, you can either display them all separately or make a slideshow using the tools in your website builder.

  • Insert your resume.
Use another one of your site's pages as a resume page.

On this page you can type out the resume for easy viewing, but may still consider placing a link on the page to bring it up as a PDF file for easy printing. This is easier than it sounds, but the exact process varies depending on your website builder. Type the text "click here for PDF version," and then look for an option to "link text to," or something similar. If you cannot find this option contact technical support through your website builder. They should be able to walk you through it.
If you do not have the software to create a PDF version of your resume you can create a Google documents account, type the resume there, and then download the file as a PDF.
