1
Purchase DJ equipment, including industrial speakers. While you can DJ an event with a general stereo, the quality of the music isn't as high. To work professionally as a DJ, you must buy industrial speakers and equipment so that the noise carries and fills the facility with sound.
-
2
Acquire DJ software and a computer. Actually jockeying disks is no longer necessary. With the use of a computer and DJ software, you can create play lists and mix into and out of songs. Consider MixMaster Pro, or another DJ software program.
-
-
3
Rip songs onto the computer. Using CDs or digital audio files, fill your computer with music to mix.
-
4
Buy or build a lighting tower. By adding lighting to your DJ system, you can make your service more professional. Purchase spot lights, strobe lights and a disco ball. Use poles to create a frame from which to suspend your lights.
-
5
Research DJ prices in your area. Before you set your price, you need to see what your competitors are charging. Move through the phone book, and contact competitors to get their prices. When asking for prices, it is advantageous not to say that you are starting a DJ business, but instead simply make an inquiry as if you were going to book their service.
-
6
Select a pricing plan. Consider your competitors' prices and the services they offer, and select prices for your service.
-
7
Place advertisements in the newspaper and phone book. Select a name, and create a logo for your business. Describe your service in clear, concise sentences. Do not list your prices in the ad. Place your contact number in a prominent location in the ad.
-
8
Create play lists for events. Different events require different types of music. As you prepare for each specific event, select tunes appropriate to the gathering.
-
9
Learn from your experiences. As you DJ more you will become better at the job. Learn from your successes and failures to master the art of DJing.
