1
Place dead twigs and rotten wood into a glass jar and position them around the house in order to catch a sampling of termites. Once they fall into the trap, close the jar. Remember that termites thrive in dead branches and rotten wood.

2
Use your magnifying glass to analyze the termites thoroughly and make note of their colors. If they are a yellowish-brown blending, then you are dealing with Formosan termites. These termites have an inclination to live in warm and humid environments.

Use your magnifying glass to examine other parts of the termite's body. If they have black or dark brown wings attached to a red body, then you are dealing with drywood termites. Be thorough in your examination, as these termites are often confused with the carpenter ant.

Search all your wooden possessions (deck, trees and cottage) for wood termites. They are very easy to recognize; in fact, they are the easiest. The best way to recognize them is to take out the wood from them. The termites will soon roam through the grass in search for more wood pieces.

Tips & Warnings
If you want to get rid of these pests with an easy method, put a wood piece that is coated with a transparent, toxic chemical. The termites will take the wood piece to the colony so as to share with their fellow brothers. If everything goes as planned, they all should die from intoxication.
Some termites are even harmful to human skin. Be careful when handling them, as they might bite you.
