How to Fall Frontward and Backward

Fall forward the wrong way and you might break your arm. Fall back without tucking your head and you might get a concussion. Follow the these guidelines and you'll spring back unscathed.

Falling Backward

Step1
Bend your knees while raising your arms to the side.
Step2
Tuck your chin. Fall back onto your buttocks in a rolling position.
Step3
Continue rolling onto the back, slapping the floor simultaneously with both palms.
Step4
Keep your chin tucked and don't strike the floor with your elbows.

Falling Forward

Step1
Bend your knees and keep your head lifted.
Step2
Use your hands and arms to slide yourself forward. Be sure your elbows are bent with your palms facing forward.
Step3
Fall forward onto your palms and forearms straightening both knees.
Step4
Keep your head up and back straight.
Step5
Land on your forearms, keeping your elbows slightly raised.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never let your head touch the ground. Always keep your chin tucked.
  • When falling backward, the tendency is to put your hands out behind you to break your fall. Don't.
  • Practice on a mat. Have a partner observe and provide corrective feedback.
  • Don't keep your arms straight or rigid during a forward fall. It could cause a serious injury.
  • Practicing the martial arts is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
