Every married couple is at risk of running into a problem with infidelity. According to a 2007 MSNBC.com survey, approximately one in five adults in a committed relationship had been unfaithful to that partner. Having an extramarital affair is being sexually or emotionally involved with another person. Avoiding certain circumstances can help you prevent ruining your marriage by having an affair.

1. Wear your wedding ring at all times. This is a symbol that signifies you are "taken" and is a reminder to both yourself and others.

2. Avoid conversations and "meetings" with people on the Internet. Social networking websites can make it easy for you to "flirt" with others without feeling the guilt that you would feel if you were saying the same things in person. Choose online friends wisely.

3. Recognize dangers in the workplace. Avoid becoming personally friendly with co-workers, and avoid situations of being alone for long periods of time with members of the opposite sex.

4. Don't cry on the shoulder of members of the opposite sex. Keep your marital problems to yourself, as sharing them can create a situation where the other person feels sorry for you when you are vulnerable.

5. Recognize that everyone is vulnerable to having an affair. Don't ever assume that you won't get involved, even if you aren't intending to do so. By recognizing your vulnerability you will naturally avoid dangerous circumstances.

6. Focus on your partner. Talking, dating and sharing will keep your relationship strong. Keep your love alive by attending to the needs of your partner. Turn to your partner for counsel and help instead of someone else. Spend alone time together.
