How to Hang a Framed Stain Glass Picture

A stained glass picture can add an interesting accent to your home. Stained glass is textured glass that has an image painted into it with pastel colors. When you hang the image in front of a light source, it casts a rainbow of colors through the room. You need to use caution when you frame and hang a stain glass picture, though, because it is a lot more breakable than a regular photograph. It also weighs more than a normal photograph, which increases the chances that it will fall. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Run a stud detector over the wall you want to hang the framed picture on. A stud offers a more secure hold than simply nailing into the drywall. The stud detector will signal you once it finds a stud behind the drywall.

    • 2

Hold the framed glass to the wall. Move it around to find what position you enjoy the most while keeping it centered over one of the studs in the wall. For the best effect, hang it at eye level. Lightly mark its location with a pencil before you pull it away.

    • 3

Hammer a nail most of the way into the stud. Leave the nail protruding about 3/8 of an inch out of the wall. Bring the framed glass up to the nail. Move the frame around until the small nook on the back of the frame catches on the nail, and adjust it until it hangs straight. Set a level across the top of the frame to ensure it is as level as it looks.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid frames that have a wire they hang from in the back. It is hard to make them stay level and the wire may snap under the weight.

  • For added stability of your stained glass image, consider installing two nails side by side to hold up the frame instead of just one nail.
