A trellis allow you to show off your vined plants.

A trellis is a patterned structure, usually made of wood, that's used to guide vines and other plants into a desired shape. Sometimes, however, decorative trellises take the focus away from the plant being displayed. One way to remedy this and camouflage the structure is to construct a trellis with natural twigs. A twig trellis will blend in and let your plant take center stage. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 19 twigs (pencil width and arm length)
  • Roll of tie wire
  • Line pliers
  • Treated picket with angled end (2-by-2-by-48 inches)

Instructions

    • 1

Grasp three twigs together and bind them with tie wire. Wrap wire around the center of the bundle. Twist the ends of the wire together using the jaws of your pliers and snip off the excess wire with the cutter on your pliers. Tap the twisted wire with the head of the pliers to flatten it against the wood. Tie off the bundle 2 inches from each end of the bundle. Tie five more bundles of three twigs each, giving you six bundles and one loose twig.

    • 2

Hold the six bundles together and bind them tightly 1 inch from one end of the stack. Place another wire wrap around the big bundle 3 inches higher than the first. Twist the wires tight, snip off the long ends and flatten the wire into the wood.

    • 3

Place the remaining loose twig at a 90-degree angle to the loose end of the bundles. Fasten the loose twig to one of the small bundles to form a cross 3 inches from the end of both the bundle and the twig. Twist the wire tight and snip the ends with your pliers.

    • 4

Tie wire another bundle 3 inches from the opposite side of the horizontal twig. Space the remaining four bundles evenly across the horizontal twig and fasten them with wire.

    • 5

Drive the angled end of the picket into the ground with your hammer. Drive the stake until only 24 inches remains above ground. Fasten the bottom of your twig trellis to the stake with tie wire every 8 inches up the stake.
